Do you
think Israel’s displacement of six million people across Gaza, Lebanon and Iran
amount to a calculated policy of demographic engineering? Or is it legitimate
self-defence?
This is
absolutely a calculated policy of demographic engineering. Because Israel is a
small country with a low population but its ambitions are enormous compared to
its demography. Think about the Greater Israel vision from Nile to Euphrates.
Even if all the Jews of the world were to settle in that land, they would
remain a minority. So they need to get rid of the existing population, just
like they did in 1948. In order to establish a democratic Jewish state on the
land of Palestine, they implemented a policy of ethnic cleansing, making
750-800 thousand of Palestinians homeless and refugee, and that amounted to
60%.
After
October 7, Israel decided to expand while getting rid of all the threats to its
existence. In that sense, its primary aim is to take the land of Gaza, West
Bank, East Jerusalem and South Lebanon. Will it survive as a democratic Jewish
state while millions of Arabs remain under its control? No. (The primary reason
for disengagement from Gaza during the reign of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in
2005 was demography, i.e. the rapid population growth and the concern for
protecting the democratic Jewish character of the state.) These are the lands
it occupied either in 1967 or 1982, and also this population has a culture of
resistance against the occupier for years. Israel knows very well what it will
face unless displace the local population.
Don’t
forget, the aspiration for displacement or ethnic cleansing didn’t begin after
October 7; the right-wing Israeli youth march with their slogans of “death to
Arabs” and “death to Mohammad” for years, and long for displacing the
Palestinians in the West Bank to Jordan and in Gaza to Egypt. This aspiration
was also expressed by right-wing politicians for a long time. This is the main
evidence for displacement of not being a legitimate self-defence.
What is
sad is that the displacement of millions of Syrians from their homeland was
basically an Iranian calculated policy of demographic engineering. Some of the
places that experienced the greatest destruction and displacement are Deraa,
Deir ez-Zor and Rif Dimashq which Israel has plans on. Lebanese militias took
part in the displacement of Syrians, and now unfortunately it’s their turn.
Is there
evidence showing that these mass uprootings were designed to destroy the social
fabric of entire populations? Is it likely to create regional instability?
Long
and/or destructive wars and displacements destroy the social fabric in
everywhere. This is inevitable. This happened in Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Lebanon,
Palestine etc. long before unfortunately. Shared values, socio-cultural norms,
perceptions, life-styles, moral codes etc. began to change, and most
importantly the trust eroded among people. When I examine all the destructive
wars in the Middle East since 1990s, I discovered the same patterns:
dispossession, poverty, ignorance, moral decay, deculturation, and
deterioration of health. I believe this was not a coincidence, this was
deliberate and for the sake of Israel’s expansion and regional hegemony. That
is why I expect the same pattern if these wars and mass uprootings continue.
Of
course this will create regional instability also. Where these uprooted and
homeless people will live? Will they able to return back? Most of them no.
Because all current military land occupations of Israel are permanent, not
temporary; it just uses disarming of the so-called terror organisations as an
excuse to expand.
This
will lead to chaos in Lebanon which is already a fragile and even semi-failed
state. Israel displaces mainly Hizballah’s social base (although not just
restricted with them), and because of sectarian hatred and confessionalism in
politics, they will not well-received in Sunni, Durzi and some
Christian-majority regions if they have to stay long. Israel will bomb the
displaced people wherever they seek refugee claiming there are terrorists among
them; so when Sunni, Durzi and Christian-majority regions become target there
will be social unrest – just like happened in the past due to existence of
Palestinian refugees and resistance groups in Lebanon. The turmoil in Lebanon
will also affect the region. Also more than one fourth of the population is
displaced in Lebanon, regardless of the displacement’s sectarian nature, this
is a huge number for any state to cope.
And
finally, Israel’s main aim is to create regional instability while expanding
and achieving its goals.
